New Jewelry Line, Recently Arrived!

June 24th, 2011

From the Allure jewelry line, these daisy matte earrings can go with practically any outfit. From super-glam to the-girl-next-door! Plus, they're made with a lightweight metal so it won't feel like weights are pulling on your ears! Come in and check out these lovely earrings, today!

Lately, we’ve been looking around for another  jewelry line to carry and we think we’ve found just the one! It’s a new brand called “Allure” and lets just say, all of Jordyn’s Closet is rather smitten with it.

Just a few days ago, Allure arrived and all the pieces are absolutely stunning! Multiple pairs of earrings came, along with a few funky bracelets and some show-stopping necklaces! What’s really nice about all the pieces from Allure is that even though they come across super expensive looking, the line is actually quite affordable! And all the jewelry is completely versatile!

Like the earrings pictured to the left, they’re the Allure Silver Matte Daisy Drop Earring. They can be worn with a pretty dress for a night out or even a Sunday brunch! Or, you can wear them daily with just a t-shirt and jeans. The best part? They’re only $15.00!

A personal favorite of mine (pictured below) is the Allure Silver Medallion Earring. Not only are these simple and chic at the same time, but they’re only $12.00! What I love about them is that even though the look heavy, they’re not. They’re made with a lightweight metal so when I wear them, I don’t feel like my earlobes are being weighted down. They’re a gorgeous pair of earrings; from the vintage medallion design, to the subtle sparkle from the rhinestones. I could wear these earrings with a cute, little, white dress to play up the innocence of the earrings, or bring some attitude while pairing them with black v-neck and some dark jeans. For only $12.00, how could I, or you, say no?

Also from Allure, these earrings look both fresh and vintage! That's we love about the Allure line! Not only does their line come up with moderate pieces of jewelry, but they also play on the vintage-y and antique-y side. These madallion earrings are so chic and lady-like.

When we ordered from Allure, we also got six new necklaces! One of them, the Allure Turquoise Oxidized Stone necklace (pictured below), was an instant favorite among Jordyn’s Closet store owner, Debbie Wikso.

Here's a more modern piece from Allure. This necklace has both an oxidized Turquoise center stone, along with a small, faceted, yellow stone to compliment it! You can wear this necklace with some denim shorts and a white v-neck to give you an effortless Summer look or layer it with some gold necklaces over a little black dress for a fun night out!

I love the Allure line. It’s beautifully, elegant, fashion jewelry with a timeless, classic look and feel. It’s not something you’d see in regular retail store. I love that [Turquoise Oxidized Stone] necklace because it’s both classy and beautiful. I can dress it up or dress it down. And the stone is absolutely gorgeous!

For only $32.00, you can own one of Summer’s hottest pieces of jewelry!

We also received a few bracelets from Allure. Of all the bracelets, the Allure Silver Wire Flower Bracelet (pictured below) has got to be the most unique. It’s made with a thick, durable, silver wire and formed into the shape of a flower. Beautiful, deep purple, faceted stones feature the “petals” of this bracelet. Also made with a lightweight material and is only $20.00!

This bracelet is super cute and a bit different from your typical bracelets! It's got a flower design made from silver wire and metallic, purple, faceted stones make up the "petals" of the flower. It almost has an air of the 1920's! It's definitely a must have, statement piece for the Summer!

As you can see, we here at Jordyn’s Closet love, love, love the Allure line and can’t wait until we can purchase more timeless pieces such as the ones featured here. We hope that when you see how beautiful these pieces are, whether on our website or in the store, that you too will fall in love with the line just as much as we have!

Helping Joplin, MO Tornado Victims

June 10th, 2011

As many of you know, besides running Jordyn’s Closet, I’m also a Registered Nurse and work full time as a Case Manager at Dell Children’s Hospital. One of my co-workers there, is from Joplin, MO and has asked her friends and colleagues for help in assisting with the relief efforts in rebuilding the community there, which was recently devastated by severe tornados. We at Jordyn’s Closet would like to help and we’d like to reach out to our amazing customers and see if any of you would like to as well. We’ll even give you Five Dollars in Jordyn’s Closet Cash in exchange for your donations! Just bring your donations into Jordyn’s Closet (you don’t need to bring them to Dell Children’s Hospital…we’ll take care of that) and we’ll give you Five Dollars in Jordyn’s Closet Cash. Simple!

Here’s a brief note from my friend, explaining what happened and what they need:

As most of you know my hometown is Joplin, Missouri which was hit by a devastating F5 tornado at the end of May. I will be traveling up there with a U-Haul next Thursday morning, June 16th to bring items for the people that lost everything. I am asking you to donate anything that you can. A lot of the people have an abundance of summer clothes right now but still have nothing for the winter months. A lot of people have found new housing but don’t have the necessities to be able to cook a meal. They are in need of pots, pans, plates, cups and many other kitchen items. After the tornado, it rained for 2 days straight so a lot of towels and sheets were ruined due to mildew. I know they are in need of drinks with electrolytes because it’s so hot.. When I talked to some of my friends they said they need household items but truthfully, whatever you can give I’m 100% sure they will be able to use. There is also a local website that is easy to navigate in order to help out the community. rebuildjoplin.org

I really appreciate anything that you are able to donate. It means a lot to me, my family and friends from the city of Joplin. Again, I will be leaving Thursday, June 16th, in the morning. I work next Sunday, Monday and Wednesday at the hospital if you would like to drop stuff off there. Thanks guys!

Thank you so much for any donations you may be able to offer. We appreciate it and the people of Joplin, MO appreciate it too!
Sincerely,
Debbie Wikso

Color vs. Cut

June 8th, 2011

In the past few days, I’ve been brushing up on some fashion and beauty magazines and I usually stumble across articles about wearing colors that instantly make you look slimmer. However, I noticed there was something missing about these articles – a lot of them don’t mention how the style or even the cut of the clothing can also give the impression of a smaller waistline. In all honesty, it doesn’t matter what color your wardrobe is bursting with, it really depends on the cut and fit of your clothing. Think of it this way – you wouldn’t put infant clothes on a five year old, would you? Of course not, because we all know that it would look silly because they didn’t fit.

While planning an outfit, it is quite common for someone to pick out a piece of clothing that hinders on the dark side; i.e. black, navy, or gray. We convince ourselves that because we wear darker colors we give off the illusion of a slimmer silhouette; most the time this is very true, however in some cases there can be a minor mishap.

When picking out clothing, make sure your clothes always fit your body type. Even if you wear something black everyday, like a dress or cardigan, always try to aim for a better cut and fit versus a color that people claim to be “slimming.”

Here are some tips that I go by when I wear darker colors, maybe they’ll help you too!

  • Look for black clothing with some texture, pretty ruffles, or even some fun and funky embellishments! Not only will these perk up your dark ensemble, but it will add visual interest.
  • Add bright colors like some red pumps or a bold printed belt like leopard or one adorned with eye catching buckles. Plus, by wearing a belt, you can accentuate your natural waistline which will also help you appear slimmer.
  • Experiment with different silhouettes. For example trendy styles such as bell sleeves, empire waists or asymmetry look less severe when the clothing is black and it also allows you to try something unexpected!
  • Pay attention to fit. A perfectly tailored black outfit always looks stylish as opposed to ill-fitting attire.
  • When wearing black, which to most isn’t a daring color, but actually is, keep hair and make up simple. If you want to experiment with your makeup or hair, keep your ensemble and accessories simple. Always remember, a little goes a long way.

Bonus tip: to keep your black lint-free use a lint-brush. A piece of wide tape works just as well. To keep your blacks from fading  (or even your colors) make sure to wash them in cold water along with a detergent that has a color protecting formula.

New Jordyn’s Closet “Gently Worn” Consignment Program

June 7th, 2011

We recently had a sale where we made some really nice, stylish clothes, shoes and accessories available at amazing prices…the catch? They were “gently worn”. Make no mistake, these items were beautiful, fashionable and best of all, a great value! If you didn’t know they had been worn a few times, you would think they were brand new!

Because of the response from our customers and the success of that sale, we’ve decided to go ahead and create a full fledged consignment program that will enable people with some items they don’t need anymore to make some money and for other people to get some great deals on some really cool items! The kinds of items we’ll accept include designer labels, vintage, jeans, leather, current basics and one-of-a-kind items and we will accept items of all sizes, including kids through women’s sizes.  Of course, we will continue to carry all of the new items we’ve always carried.

So, if you’ve got a closet that’s bursting at the seams, or just a few extra items that you don’t need anymore, bring them in and make some cash or trade it for something new! Here’s how it works:

  1. Items must be in good condition – no holes, stains, smells, etc. – and should be in style. Items that sell the best are jeans, designer label items and other top name brands.
  2. Our store owner, Debbie Wikso, will evaluate the items and choose the ones that she thinks will be most appealing to our customers. She will also set the price that we’ll sell the items for.
  3. You can opt to receive cash or in store credit for your items. If you would like cash, we’ll pay you 40% of the amount that we sell your items for. If you would like in store credit, you’ll receive 50% of the amount we sell your items for. Payment will be made (or credit issued) after the items are sold. Please make sure that we have your name, current phone number and e-mail address on file.
  4. We will keep your items in stock for one month. If they have not sold during that time, you can come back and pick them up or we can donate them to charity.

So come on into Jordyn’s Closet and let’s see what you’ve got!

“Essential Fashion: 4 Classic Pieces of Clothing That Will Never Go Out Of Style”

May 25th, 2011

The fashion world can be hard for an aspiring fashionista! With trends coming and going faster than you can blink, it’s a pretty fast paced world to keep on top of. One day, its distressed denim, the next its cropped jackets! Not only are new and improved trends popping up on the style map, but they can also cost big bucks to play with the big girls.

In today’s post, I’ll tell you what 4 classic pieces of clothing you should never retire! Not to mention, you’ll save yourself time and money. Each of these classic pieces can be worn again and again. Dress them up, dress them down, either way, you’ll save yourself from breaking your bank by trying to keep up with the fashion world.

Nude Heels: Nude heels have been in style the last couple years, but I’ve noticed them a lot lately in stores and on celebrities. So, if you’ve never dared to debut a nude heel, go for it. The beautiful thing about owning a pair of nude heels (or pumps) is they elongate the appearance of your legs especially if it’s a hue close to your skin color. They don’t have to be matching, seeing as how summer is the time to showcase that sun-kissed skin.
They go with almost any outfit including jeans, dresses, skirts etc. and come in so many different shades of nude. You can wear black, navy, hot pink, yellow, even prints, the nude shade goes with everything and won’t be a competing factor in your overall ensemble.

*Bonus! You can wear them all year unlike a boot or sandal; a nude heel will go with dresses and outfits throughout every season. Hence, this is one item you’ll not want to get rid of.

Blazers: There are plenty of styles of blazers out there in fashion world, but the two that I find work well with every outfit (and on every figure) are the “Boyfriend Blazer” and the “Modern Blazer.”

  • Boyfriend Blazer: fits a bit looser than your typical blazer. It’s got longer sleeves and more room for the waist and bust. This kind of blazer looks best with Skinny Jeans/Jeggings and Shorts. If you’re going with a jegging, make sure your top is loose, but ever so slightly. Honestly, a men’s V-Neck works rather well. Throw the Blazer on, maybe some peals for that air of sophistication and some pretty flats.
  • Modern Blazer: is more fitted. Most modern blazers these days are slightly cinched at the waist to create that flawless hourglass figure. The lovely thing about owning a Modern blazer is you can wear it with anything, and I mean anything! From Skinny jeans to dresses, this blazer really pulls the look together in a matter of seconds.

All in all, if you have a blazer hiding somewhere in the depths of your closet, definitely take it out and rock it. It will add instant glam and sophistication to any outfit.

The Little Black Dress (LBD): A [little] black dress is simple and chic; you can’t go wrong when you wear one. The beauty of it is you can change the look of it so quickly depending on the shoes, bag and jewelry you wear.

The first step is finding a dress that has clean lines and a minimum of detail. The key is to make sure it suits your shape. It should hug you where you are the slimmest and skim over lumps and bumps. If black washes you out, your little black dress could actually be slate grey, plum or navy. Want to dress up your LBD? Look for a dress with something extra – embellishment at the neck, or embroidery.

Here are some tips to make your LBD more day, work, and night friendly.

Day: Wear with flats to get a more relaxed feel or pairing with some fun colored tights, like maroon, plum, or even a lacey effect. Not into bright colors? Here’s an alternative: natural fabrics and textures can do wonders to dress down glam fabrics.
Relaxed shapes such as a blazer, or fitted boyfriend cardigan will instantly dress down that dress but still make you look glam.

Work: Keep the necklines refined- layer items, such as scarf or even some pearls to keep it professional looking. Pair structured items such as nipped waist blazers, closed toe shoes in black or a neutral shade, and keep jewelry simple. Keep everything proportioned– if your dress is short (for work environments, keep hemline just above the knee) layer a fitted, cropped blazer to cover up the arms. If you’re not a blazer gal, opt for a vest. It gives the same air of sophistication as a blazer would.

Night: Turn up the glam! Don’t be afraid to embrace glitter, shimmer and shine in your accessories; even a little sparkle in the dress itself can be trés chic! Keep the décolletage to a minimum and show off details of the dress like plunging necklines or back-lines. If your LBD has a plunging neckline, keep accessories elegant— try some bold, emerald earrings to add some color to your ensemble. If your dress has a neckline that covers up, try a funky necklace to shed some light on the dark. Slip into some sexy heels and you’ll be red carpet ready.

When all is said and done, a Little Black Dress can go a long way.

Dark Denim: whether you fancy skin-tight skinnies or boot strutting flare, dark denim is a classic fashion statement. Dark indigo to black washes streamline your shape and create a long clean line from hip to hem. Dark denim looks great with practically anything; pastels, brights, neutrals, and prints.

Remember:

  • When rocking the skinnies, try to avoid anything too clingy. Loose tops like your boyfriend’s band shirt or a classic Oxford button up will work just fine.
  • When rocking bootcut or flared jeans, go for something a little more fitted. A camisole and a fitted cardigan that hits a little below your hips are tight enough but not too tight where you’ll feel suffocated.

No matter the occasion or where you’re off to, darker denim is a universally flattering look.

This!… is American Idol, fashion update!

April 18th, 2011

This dress by Jovani, is made with a fitted, zebra, corset top adorened with black and silver sequins! The bottom half of the dress is made with a ruffled black tulle!

Are you a fan of the famous show American Idol? If so, we’ve got a contestant for you to keep your eye on, Lauren Alaina! Not only does she bring down the house with her southern vocals, but she also knows how to rock the fashion world! For her latest performances, Alaina has been spotted wearing dresses by the designer Jovani!

Last Wednesday, Alaina donned a sparkly, zebra printed, Jovani dress! To make the dress a bit more casual, she shortened it from the original floor length version and wore her signature black cowboy boots! The Jovani dress is made with a fitted corset adorned with black and silver sequins, arranged in a zebra pattern. It’s also cinched at the waist to give instant and glamorous curves! The bottom of the dress is made with a black ruffled tulle; again, the dress Alaina wore was the shortened version, while the dress at Jordyn’s Closet is in it’s original floor-length version!  You can view the dress in person or you can view it online!

That wasn’t the only Jovani dress to hit the stage! Two weeks ago, Alaina wore another Jovani dress! This pretty number is definitely the best of both worlds.  The dress itself is sexy, sequined mini paired with an elegant, layered train! Alaina rocked the black version of this stunning dress; at Jordyn’s Closet, we carry its fuchsia counterpart! Even though Steven Tyler said to Alaina, “Maybe when you’re making and selling records, you can buy the rest of your dress!” we think this showstopper is beautiful and sexy just the way it is!

A sparkly mini paired with an elegant, layered train!

Lauren Alainea donned this beautiful dress two weeks ago on the famous hit show, American Idol!

So, if you ever find yourself envying and wishing you could have the same dresses as this AI contestant, wish no more! We have these two, stunning dresses among others that are sure to make you a showstopper in your own way!

“Honey, you can’t blame her for what her Momma gave her!”

March 24th, 2011

Ladies! It's time to flaunt what you've got and break out those skinny jeans you've kept hidden from the fashion world!

Skinny Jeans: Slim-fit pants or skinny jeans that have a snug fit through the legs and end in a small leg opening that can be anywhere from 9″ to 20″ depending on size.

Okay now, how many of you read and re-read that last sentence ending in “…depending on size?” I know I did and it got me thinking. Sure, Skinny Jeans look ultra fabulous on tall, skinny girls, but can confident, sexy, curvy girls pull off the same style of jeans? They sure can! Now more than ever, females who are realizing that they’re curves have more sex-appeal and are choosing more snug and flattering pieces rather than covering themselves up! One piece of clothing in particular is the Skinny Jean. Celebrities such as Kim Kardashian, America Ferrera, and Jennifer Hudson are donning the skintight jean trend and they’re not afraid to flaunt what they’ve got!

The best way to wear your favorite pair of skinnies, is to make sure that your outfit is proportional. The last thing you want to be seen in are skintight jeans and a skintight top. First of all, it’s not flattering and second of all… it’s just a ‘No.’ Sorry to burst any bubbles, ladies. When wearing your skinny jeans, here are some personal tips of mine that you should always keep in mind:

  • Choose a darker denim over a lighter denim. As a general fashion rule, dark washes like black, charcoal gray or indigo blue will be most slimming. However, if you’re more of a ‘color denim’ gal, try to pick a deep purple or blue shade. Lighter washes and brighter colors add bulk onto your curvy frame; you want to flatter your figure and darker washes will not only flatter you but add instant glam and chic-ness to your overall ensemble!
  • Think skinny on the bottom  and voluminous on the top. Anything that doesn’t cling to you is going to be your best option when donning Skinny Jeans. Tunics that drape and what I like to call, “breezy” blouses look tres magnifique with your skinnies. Pick a top that has some action going on to add some fun to your outfit. Bold stripes or pretty floral print will work wonderfully. If you’re not into wearing looser tops, opt for a fitted t-shirt or tank, tuck it in, and throw a Boyfriend Cardigan or funky blazer over it!
  • Go long. When shopping around for skinnies, opt for ones that are longer and cover a bit of your heel. It elongates the legs and makes you look taller. And, a little scrunching can be a good thing.
  • Get the right size. This applies to all styles of jeans, no matter what cut or style you fancy. This means no muffin-top and no gap in the back or front. Your skinny jeans (or whatever jeans you wear) should be comfortable and hug your curves– not squish them.
  • Heels. Need I say more? Flats work just as well with skinny jeans, but if you’re going for a taller effect, heels are the shoe of choice. They lengthen the legs and lift your posterior.
  • Wear a belt. Accentuate your curvy (or hourglass) shape with a chic belt cinched at your natural waist.

So, ladies! Don’t be afraid to break out those skinny jeans you’ve hidden in your drawers! Flaunt what you’ve got and be proud that you’ve some curvy-licious sex appeal!
